Western Plains Wind Farm Update - December 2022

New project owner

In May 2022 Ark Energy completed its friendly acquisition of Epuron, the proponent for the Western Plains Wind Farm, and in October 2022 the Epuron name was retired.

Ark Energy is a subsidiary of Korea Zinc, the first major refiner to join RE100 and commit to powering its global operations from 100% clean energy by 2050.

The Ark Energy team will continue the work of delivering renewable energy projects in Tasmania and across Australia as the country focuses on decarbonising the electricity sector and the creation of new jobs in the industries of the future.

There are no changes to the plans for the Western Plains Wind Farm as a result of the project’s change in ownership.

Project update

The Western Plains Wind Farm project team continues to progress the work required for the development application under the new planning scheme and the requirements of both the Environment Protection Authority Tasmania and under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

The opportunity to provide local green power to the community is also under consideration given the advantages of a new, underground powerline as proposed, from the project via Stanley to Port Latta substation.

Work opportunities outlined in new guide

As Tasmania takes advantage of Australia’s energy transition it provides a significant opportunity for job growth, mostly in regional areas and for civil works including machine operators and drivers, trades and technicians.

Australia’s Clean Energy Council has published an online careers guide with job descriptions, required qualifications and transferable skills, opportunities by technology and occupation, and career pathways. The guide is available online here.

Season's greetings

Thank you to everyone who has engaged with us and provided input for this project to date. We wish the Stanley and wider community a safe and enjoyable festive season, and look forward to updating you again in 2023.
