The Sun Metals Energy Storage System (SMESS) is a 130 MW storage system with a 2-4 hour duration, to be co-located with the Sun Metals Solar Farm, within the Sun Metals Industrial Precinct near Townsville in North Queensland.

The SMESS will enable coordinated energy management between the grid, the solar farm and SunHQ Hydrogen Hub, facilitating operational efficiency and further decarbonising Ark Energy's sister company the Sun Metals Zinc Refinery.
